After the emotional collapse that follows her mother’s illness, Maruša builds an intense online bond with Alja, who masks her own struggles behind curated posts. When they finally meet, they are forced to confront the truths they’ve been trying so hard to hide.
Synopsis
MARUŠA (mid-twenties), a sarcastic ex–party girl, feels lost after a traumatic period of taking care of her terminally ill mother. She seeks refuge at her estranged father’s farm, but neither he nor his new family can give her the support she needs. Her only comfort is Billie, her late mother’s man-hating dachshund, and ALJA (mid-twenties), a girl she met online.
Alja is an awkward Slovenian nurse who lives and works in a small German beach town. She goes on bad dates and posts humorous videos about her undiagnosed illness. Bonding over their shared struggles and a sense of humor, Maruša and Alja quickly develop a close friendship.
After burning bridges at home, Maruša decides to travel to Germany to spend New Year’s Eve with her new friend. When they finally meet in person, the complexities of their lives—including Alja’s health issues and personal dilemmas—cause their effortless friendship to take an unexpected turn.
