Every morning, four youngsters are awakened at a Children’s Hospital. They undergo hemodialysis for years. One winter day, a kidney donor is found. Life comes to an end for one, while for another, life will continue.
Synopsis
An elevator. In the middle of the cabin sits a teenage boy, Andriy Ilnytskyi, staring at his mobile phone and paying no attention to the adults discussing his future. Voices off-screen: “Where will they take Andriy now?” “To Okhmatdyt hospital for now.”
In the corridor of the unit, Eva is interviewing her friends. There’s the scrappy orphan Andriy, the open-minded youngster Klevan, the respectable Liosha, and their leader Danya. ‘How long have you been staying here? What are your dreams?’ Klevan says something incomprehensible. Eva asks again. He dreams of getting a kidney.
Danya’s mother is told that she is suitable as a donor. Danya starts crying hard. He is afraid that she might die.
Andriy is in a hemodialysis room. The doctor tells his neighbour Sasha that he is about to undergo a kidney transplant. Sasha is harsh, saying, “You’re out of luck. You weren’t a match.”
A kidney donor is found. One kidney is meant for Klevan. He glows with happiness as he says goodbye to everyone in the department. Andriy cannot believe he isn’t a match.
After the surgery, Klevan is escorted home by the entire hospital staff. He is very surprised in a taxi asking his father: ‘What’s this? And that?’ For several years he has not seen life outside the hospital.
The hospital’s large hall turns into a fairy-tale setting on Christmas. Andriy remains alone in his ward anticipating the arrival of new companions to the unit.
Right after the Christmas, Klevan’s kidney has failed.
Springtime. Doctors are planting a young hawthorn tree. One of them hangs a talisman, a symbol of remembrance for Klevan.
The doctors confirm Liosha’s surgery. His transplant goes well.
A missile attack on Kyiv. A hit on the hospital. Andriy is wounded. Liosha and his grandmom manage to get out of the collapsed basement.
Andriy is remaining alone, as all of his friends and their relatives have left the hospital. A month later, he meets a family in Kyiv that plans to adopt him. He is undergoing surgery.
