22 cinema projects from 15 countries will be presented to a film industry audience during the fourth edition of the co-production forum When East Meets West that will take place from January 20 to 22 in the context of the Trieste Film Festival.

Organized by the Fondo per l’Audiovisivo of Friuli Venezia Giulia, When East Meets West will feature a special focus on the Benelux countries with a series of panels and encounters on co-production opportunities with Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxemburg.

A commission consisting of international experts evaluated 200 entries – 23 from the Benelux countries, 32 from Italy and 145 from Eastern Europe – from a total of 29 countries in order to choose 22 projects in development (10 documentaries and 12 fiction features) that will be presented to a large number of potential international co-producers and distributors. “The notable increase in the number of projects bear witness not only to the successful concept of WEMW, but also to the growing interest in the new EU countries in establishing co-production relationships in Western Europe and vice versa,” remarks Paolo Vidali, director of the Fondo per l’Audiovisivo del Friuli Venezia Giulia.

One of this year’s novelties is the FILMMORE Talent Emerging Award, a new prize of 5.000 Euro made available by FILMMORE, one of the most prominent post-production studios in the Benelux.

The international jury, including Nikolaj Nikitin (FILMPLUS), Matthieu Darras (TORINO FILM LAB), and Kristina Trapp (EAVE), will award the WEMW Development Award to the best project, as well as a study grant for the participation in the next edition of the EAVE European Producers Workshop.

A special mention goes to the renewed support for WEMW by the MEDIA Programme, CEI (Central European Initiative), MiBACT (Italian Cultural Ministry) and the Regione Autonoma Friuli Venezia Giulia, the network of partners and supporters that confirms the key role of WEMW in the development of new, internationally significant projects.
